Atomic weapon
Image:AtomicBomb.jpg The atomic bomb (also known as an atomic weapon, the bomb, nuclear weapon, or more commonly nuke or nuclear missile) is one of the most powerful weapons produced by Humans in the 20th century. It utilizes a nuclear reaction to release enough energy to devastate an entire city. The detonation of a nuclear weapon can be seen by a distinctive mushroom-shaped cloud and the subsequent radioactive contamination causes radiation sickness.
Vulcans developed and used nuclear weapons widely in the wars leadings up to the Time of Awakening around 350 A.D., devastating their civilization. (ENT: "Awakening")
For over one hundred years, only two nuclear weapons were used in combat on Earth; these were used by the United States of America on Japan at the end of the Second World War. Because of the weapon's destructive power, countless amounts of nuclear weapons were produced and tested between 1945-1990, mostly by the US and the Soviet Union. During this period, which became known as the Cold War, mankind was constantly on the brink of self-annihilation. (ENT: "Carbon Creek")
When Quark, Rom, Nog, and Odo were accidentally transported to 1947 Earth, they harnessed the beta radiation released by an atomic bomb test in the Nevada desert to return to the 24th century. (DS9: "Little Green Men")
Even though peace was declared between the two nations at the end of the 20th century, humanity's worst fear was realized in 2053 with the Third World War. Six hundred million were killed and most cities were destroyed. (Star Trek: First Contact)
Weapons considered by 23rd Century Starfleet to be "atomic" were used in the Earth-Romulan War. This may include atomic bombs. (TOS: "Balance of Terror")
